Barra do Cunhau

kitesurfing in Barra do Cunhau

The constant wind of Barra do Cunhaú makes the town a natural site for the practice of kitesurfing and windsurfing – whether on the ocean or on the river. The encouraging southeastern winds are strongest between July and January.

Excellent destination for kitesurfing novices, where the protected river means the sport can be practiced on a completely flat surface. For windsurfers, the site also presents excellent conditions, such as the possibility of setting sail in the less sedate ocean waters.

Wind sports, mainly kitesurfing, are changing the town's seascapes with their colourful and attractive sails. A common sight on windy days and weekends are the dozens of sails skipping and skimming the waves of Barra do Cunhaú.

Increasingly, kitesurfers from around Brazil and the world have sought out Barra do Cunhaú as a destination for practicing the sport, and in the process altering the local economy.

Check out the statement in Trip magazine by Guilly Brandão, World Kitesurfing Champion of the wave category:" Where are the best spots to practice kitesurfing in Brazil ? From João Pessoa northward we have ideal conditions. There's a place just 15 minutes from the beach of Pipa [ Rio Grande do Norte], called Barra do Cunhaú. The water is smooth and the wind is perfect. One of the best places."
